Certainty


As surely as the sun emerges in the east

To warm the vaprous liquid of the earth

Moving slumbered life to life

Then to its rest again

Will love be true.


As brilliantly from still of heavens starred in grey

The colors spark the muted earth at dawn

While your eyes so round are filled

With the clearness of the daylight

                                                Replies to a well-meaning person



She said to me with much concern "You look a little drawn."

I said, "Yeah, I have  been to the painter and had this painted on."

She said, "If I'm not mistaken you look a little bit high-strung."

"No surprise at that " said I, "I've just played guitar and sung

"Well," she said, "I'm sure you must be beat."

"No doubt," said I, "I came from a poetry retreat."

"I don't know why you must travel so far away."

Honey, its only since I've begun to feel this way."

"Spend some time in luxury, relax at this one spot."

"I can't afford that, far too dear, with the credentials that I got."

Diner

Found in my brother's papers. Written at age 21 or 22, circa 1970 After swerving down Merrick road we pulled into the pantry diner. It was about 3:15 in the morning and a cop was already stationed out front, more or less ignoring the inebriated state of almost everyone who went in.
